Plan a weekly question round with friends

Late October, people start disappearing to hometowns. The group chat goes quiet until someone posts a photo of sweets. You do not need a daily call to keep the group. You need one question a week, and permission to skip.

This is a small recurring round you run yourselves. No app streak, no reminder, no leaderboard. One person asks. The others answer when they can. Next week, someone else asks, or you skip.

The six steps

  1. Keep the group small. People who already talk to each other. Five is plenty. Fifteen is a crowd.
  2. Pick one host for this week. Anyone can start. After that, last week's host names the next one, or you go around in a fixed order.
  3. The host writes one question with four honest options. Not a trick, not a test. Every option should be something a real person in the group might pick.
  4. Send it once. In a chat, at the table, or as a four-option question in QuesMo. Do not chase people who have not answered.
  5. People answer when they can. Pass is always fine. No score.
  6. Next week, a different host. If someone is travelling or tired, skip the week. The round survives a gap. It dies if you turn it into homework.

Four weeks of themes, if you want them

You do not need a calendar. If a theme helps the host, use this and then throw it away.

Week 1, food. "What did you actually eat most this week?" Options: leftover rice, something from a packet, a proper cooked meal, whatever was nearest.

Week 2, evenings. "A free evening, no plans. You..." Options: stay in, walk to the usual place, call someone, sleep early.

Week 3, a small plan. "If we did one thing next month, it would be..." Options: a meal, a short trip, a film, nothing, we are tired.

Week 4, something noticed. "What did you overbuy or forget this week?" Options: milk, charging cable, a snack you already had, I cannot remember.

When week 5 comes, start again with new wording, or drop the themes. The point is the habit of asking, not a syllabus.

A note you can send

Copy this, change the names, send it yourself. Do not paste it into a list of strangers.

"One question a week, four options, pass is fine. I will ask this week. Next week someone else. If you are away, skip. No chasing."

That is the whole invitation.

How not to repeat yourselves

Before you send, skim the last few questions. If this week's stem is the same as last week's with a new noun, rewrite it. "Favourite food" and "food you could eat every day" are the same question. "What did you actually eat this week" is not.

If you are stuck, take something you just did and narrow it. The everyday-moment guide is for that. For a one-off evening rather than a weekly habit, use the ten-minute round.

Where this does not work

Do not use a weekly question to check who is "still in the group". If someone goes quiet, they went quiet. A skipped week is not a failing. This also fails if the host writes options that only one person would pick, or if the question is a trap about money, family, or work. Keep it light. Diwali week, travel week, exam week: skip is the correct move.

Use it in QuesMo

A weekly round does not need the app. If you want a friend to tap an answer and see whether they matched yours, that is what questions with friends are for. How QuesMo works covers the actual steps on Android. To write the four options cleanly, see make one good four-option question.
